FOLIKAN is highly-acclaimed all Japanese West African percussion band based in Fukuoka, in the south-western part of Japan.
They started a band called FOLIKAN named by MAMADY KEITA, legendary world-renowned African musician (Djembe player) in August 1999.
Since then they have visited West African countries like Guinea, Mali and Senegal repeatedly to study the traditional music and keep brushing up their skills.
FOLI means 'talk' or 'play' and KAN means 'sound' in Malinke, one of the ethnic (Manding) languages in West Africa.
As the name of FOLIKAN implies, their performances are based on West African traditional music called 'MANDING,' playing various kinds of West African traditional instruments such as Djembe, Dundun, Barafone, Kora, Fule, etc.
They also interpret the meaning of FOLIKAN as 'Sounds from the Spirit' to pursue their very own original sounds inspired by West African traditional music to freely express from energetic rhythmic combinations of drumming to smooth melodious African feelings.
FOLIKAN appears on a lot of stages at festivals, events, school concerts, clubs, livehouses, etc. mainly in the KYUSHU area.
They continue spreading their positive and peaceful sound messages to people by playing the great African musical instruments.
Their highly-anticipated first album 'Anya Fo!' is released!!
